Survey: ‘UK shoppers favour glass bottles and jars

Glass packaging – 100% recyclable and non-toxic – is proving to be a hit with shoppers,

according to a new survey by Friends of Glass.

Friends of Glass pointed to the impact of last autumn’s BBC Blue Planet II series, which raised serious concerns about the poor state of our marine systems and oceans, saying that it continues to have a profound effect on public attitudes and behaviour.

The Europe-wide survey found that 73% of both Europeans and UK shoppers rate glass as the most ocean-friendly beverage packaging, while 83% of Britons (78% Europeans) have noticed a change in their own behaviour recently and pay more attention on the environmental impact of their daily life and actions. The survey also found that 78% of Britons ranked glass as their preferred beverage packaging choice.

Brook Hayes, communications manager at British Glass which manages the Friends of Glass campaign in the UK commented: “People have been shocked by what Blue Planet II revealed about the poor state of our oceans. When we asked respondents what sprung to mind when thinking about the ocean, ‘beautiful’ was one of the most popular words, but so was ‘polluted’. Making a positive choice for glass packaging, which is one of the most sustainable and eco-friendly forms of packaging on the shelves, is one small but significant thing we can all do to take care of our oceans now and in the future.”

Crucially, glass bottles and jars are made from recycled glass, sand ,soda ash and limestone. All of the raw ingredients of glass occur in nature, and its unique properties mean that even if a glass container were to end up in the ocean or landfill ,rather than being recycled,it will not release any harmful chemicals that may pollute and harm our marine system.
